Autumn in Arashiyama

On the second Sunday of November each year, the Momiji Festival takes place in Arashiyama, on the western outskirts of Kyoto. The festival celebrates the colouring of the autumn leaves, especially the red maples. One of our buddies in the SKP program, Mai, showed us around the beautiful area.

As part of the festival one of the Kyoto geisha performed tea ceremony demonstrations which was very interesting to watch. So much careful detail, in the makeup and dressing of the geisha and in all of the actions performed in the tea ceremony.

Leaving the direct area of the festival but still surrounded by crowds of people, we visited Arashiyama’s most well-known attraction, the bamboo grove. Even with all the people, it was still a very peaceful place. I always feel great after spending a day among the trees.

Also, icecream. Green tea and black sesame, so good!
